On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit."
John 20: 19 - 22
I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn't want hope.
I have met some people who seem to go through life without hope, others who give a shrug to hope - and a few energetic creatures who actually have hope.
Hope changes everything.
Here at Invite, we believe in hope.
After Jesus died, the disciples didn't have much hope. Instead, they huddled up, fearful and locked down. But one day, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Most of them didn’t question how a dead man lived. They were just excited to see their teacher.
Then, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit."
That was a significant moment. The breath of the Triune God came to the disciples. Jesus started a New Creation—one with the power of heaven, here on Earth. He also gave a promise that day to all who follow him. As followers of Jesus, we have that same breath in us. When we receive the Holy Spirit, our fear turns to hope. We are free to live out the promise of God’s creation and discover an abundant life.
This is what Invite is about: inviting all people to participate in the New Creation by receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit and using these gifts for the benefit of others.
